History

Situated on a 1.2 Acre block at Palen Creek, St James’ was built in the early 20th Century by Mr W. Norman on land donated by Mr. John Yore. The Beaudesert despatch of August 23rd, 1903 records an interesting little ceremony having taken place at Palen Creek the previous Sunday August 16th, 1903. The event was the setting of the first stump of the new Catholic Church, the job of setting the stump was given to Messrs Barnes and Yore.

(Mr. Yore is thought to be Mr John Yore, donor of the land and the first to be buried in the Church Cemetery in 1904)

The Beaudesert Times reported on May 8th, 1936 that the committee of the Church of St James’ at Palen Creek had advised the Parish Priest, Fr. O’Keeffe that when the church had been built it had been left without interior lining and had not been provided with Sanctuary or a Sacristy. The committee organised the drawing up of plans for the work to be carried out later that year. (No details of this work are available.)

Brisbane’s Catholic Leader of November 18th, 1948 gives an account of the blessing of the extensions to the church by Archbishop Duhig. The Archbishop was accompanied by the Parish Priest Fr. O.B. Steele and assistant Fathers J. Brosnan and B. Kelly.
