Baptism

Baptism

Baptism is the first Sacrament. It incorporates us into the Church and through it we are “Reborn” as daughters and sons of God.

Baptism is performed by immersion in, or pouring of water and the words “I Baptise you in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit”.

Parents who ask to have their children Baptised accept the responsibility of training them in the practice of the Faith and bringing them up to keep God’s Commandments.

Baptism Symbols

Water is the central symbol of Baptism. Because water is essential to all life, the water of Baptism symbolises the life-giving grace that sustains those who have become children of God.

Oil is used twice in the ceremony. Before the Baptism, the child’s breast is smeared with the Oil of Catechumens as a sign of healing and strengthening.

Afterwards the crown of the head is anointed with perfumed Chrism as a symbol of joy and thanksgiving.

The white garment with which the newly Baptised is then clothed symbolises their new life in Christ and is “the outward sign of Christian dignity”.

A Baptismal Candle is lit from the Paschal Candle beside the Font and presented to the new member as a sign of the Light of Christ.

When and Where?

Baptism is welcoming your child into the Catholic Community.  It is a joyous occasion and one for which it is important to prepare.  In St Mary’s Parish we require you to attend one session of preparation.  We hold Baptism preparation sessions on the 1st Sunday of the month at 10.30am.  Baptism celebrations are held on Saturdays between 10 am and 11am, the 2nd, 3rd and 4th Sundays of the month within or after 9.30am Mass at St. Mary’s Church. For Baptisms in other churches within our Parish or other Parishes, dates and times are negotiated with the Parish office.

Godparents

Choosing a Godparent for your child may cause you some deliberation, however, consider the requirements; must be over 16 years of age, has received Baptism, Confirmation and Eucharist and is happy to practice their faith. No more than four Godparents is the policy of this parish, and at least one must be a Catholic. Consider asking someone who you feel will be able to support you in raising your child in the faith. It is a privilege to be asked to be a Godparent and not something you do to try and include all of your relations.

Baptism Preparation

In the St Mary’s Parish we require you to attend one session of preparation. We hold the Baptism preparation sessions on the 1st Sunday of the month at 10:30am in the Parish Centre.

Enrolment

Please complete the enquiry form below. This will enable you to obtain an Enrolment form from the Parish Office. Complete the enrollment registration form (adults, infants and children) as soon as contact is made.  The form needs to be completed, signed by both parents and returned to the Parish Office together with the $100 contribution.  Your contribution will help pay for resources, photocopying, booklets, administration, use of church, etc.  It would be appreciated if this contribution could be paid at the Parish Office prior to or at Baptism Preparation.

If you do not live in the Beaudesert Parish, it is usually expected to contact your home Parish to arrange for Baptism preparation. Once undertaken, your Parish Priest will send confirmation of preparation to the Beaudesert Parish Priest, and then from our Parish, the Baptism is organised.
