History

Before the building of St Margaret Mary’s Church, Mass was held within the private homes of Canungra residents, but by the year 1911 only about one service a year was being held in Canungra. That year Mr and Mrs. Michael Corcoran were married and it was suggested by Mrs Corcoran that Mass should be celebrated more regularly and offered her lounge room as the venue. Every three months the Corcoran house became the place of worship for Canungra Catholics until the congregation became too large and from that point the School of Arts was used until the Church was built. The movement for the erection of a Church in Canungra was made in 1929 at the instigation of Fr. Hennessy and a building committee was subsequently formed.

St Margaret Mary’s Church sits on a five-sided block of land in Kidston Street Canungra, the block was purchased from Mrs. Jane Lahey, the Beaudesert Times of November 17th, 1933 records details of the laying of the foundation block and the blessing of the grounds by Archbishop Duhig, accompanied by Fathers O’Keeffe and O’Callaghan. The church building was designed by J. P. (Jack) Donaghue and built by B. Robertson, with the official opening by Archbishop Duhig being held on June 24th, 1934
